About the Chart:
Writing a pedigree chart for the web from scratch was relatively easy but by necessity of it’s width had to be kept separate from this blog. Although there seemed to be many good genealogical programs out there to help with this task, none of them seemed to meet my needs exactly.
I wanted my pedigree chart needed to meet the following criteria:
- to reach six or more generations deep (in the end 6 proved to be the maximum I could get away with without breaking the next condition)
- to be able to leave information out without it looking like a fill in the blanks puzzle. (to this end, I have conspired to add bits of additional chart below the main one)
- to be the table of contents for my collection of assembled documents.
- to organize my family research in an intuitive and understandable manner that clearly showed the relationship between each and every person on the chart.
- to allow other direct descendants to be able to use the chart at the point of our common ancestry.
- to be css/xhtml compliant.
On my side, was the simplicity of restricting the chart to a direct pedigree and leaving out the complications of siblings and first and second cousins.
